Behavioral Questions
Can you describe a digital marketing campaign that you were a part of that didn’t go to plan? Why did it go wrong, and how did you react?
Has there been a time that you have had to combine analytical thinking and creativity to overcome a problem?
Here you’re looking for a combination of skills and an ability to work independently.
How do you motivate your performance marketing team to surpass targets and give their best?
This will give you a good indication of what sort of manager your candidate will be and how focused they are on their team, group happiness and motivation.
Soft Skills
Describe a digital marketing campaign that you have worked on from start to finish. What challenges did you come across, and how were you successful?
Gives you a good sense of their working techniques and how well they know the campaign process end-to-end.
How would you describe digital marketing to a person who was completely new to the industry?
This will give you a good idea of their communication skills and knowledge of the industry as a whole.
Do you regularly keep up with industry news and marketing trends? How do you apply this to your work?
Gives a good scope of how much they enjoy the industry they are working in and how dedicated they are to making the best of their work.
Hard Skills
What is the difference between SEO and SEM?
For all of the questions above you should be reassured that the candidate understands the basics of their position and is already familiar with the common tools.
What would you say makes digital marketing different from traditional marketing?
From this question you’ll get a good understanding of the candidates overall skills and scope of the industry.
Operational / Situational Questions
Describe a time when you worked on a project with a tight budget, how did you manage that?
Should give examples of working under pressure and how well they can handle money related to sensitive subjects.
Tell me about a situation where you worked as part of a team to execute a marketing project that was mission critical, what role did you play within the team?
Gives you a good sense of the candidates personality and how they work with other people.
Have you worked on a cross functional project before? How many people were in the team and how did you find being involved?
This should represent what kind of person they are in different situations and how they connect with different team members.
If you were tasked with improving the overall traffic of our company, how would you structure that process and how would you measure its success?
They should have a solid process and know which KPIs would be most important for traffic improvements.
